As the saying goes, "what gets measured, gets done" and our goal for geographic independence is not likely to be an exception. As a result, we've put some effort into figuring how to consistently measure our passive income so that we can track progress toward our goal. We want to start with some sort of monthly measurement at this early point in our goal, even though the income will likely not roll-in as equal, monthly payments. Here is a summary of our thought processes.

My wife and I spent some time over the past holiday weekend coming up with the numbers that define our geographic independence goal. We tried to approach this from multiple different directions. What do we need? What do we think we can achieve? When you figure out what it takes to get there, does it seem at all feasible?

As indicated by the title of this blog, its opening post, and hopefully a bunch of other content, my wife and I have established a mid-term financial goal of achieving geographic independence. But we really haven't created a credible plan to achieve it yet. It's time to start documenting some of what I've been thinking in regards to what that plan is, or ought to be.

Michael Lewis, the author of 'Liar's Poker', has written an anecdotal analysis of the mortgage meltdown that both shocks and scares me. The picture he paints leaves me seriously wondering what Wall Street will look like when the current market turmoil resolves. It has also inspired some significant internal debate in me regarding what we should be doing to best position ourselves to reach our goal of geographic independence.

We recently received a relatively large, lump sum, cash amount from a life insurance payout. This gave us the the "opportunity" to argue about what to do with it, plus the "fun" of struggling our way through some different priorities. Should we pay off the second mortgage? What about that auto loan? How much, if any, should we invest and should it be via a lump sum or dollar cost averaging? Should we look into angel investing or even buying a business? Is it just us or is talking about money matters always difficult?

Did you know that GE is currently promising an annual dividend yield of 7.35% based on today's closing price of $16.86? While that's a pretty high dividend rate right from the start, things look even better if you start to think about GE's long history of raising the dividend. Admittedly, this is based on assumptions, but it is conceivable you could be earning a 19.07% dividend yield in 10 years if GE maintains its recent 10% annual dividend growth.

After a number of discussions with my wife, we've agreed that we are setting our long-term financial goal as the achievement of "Geographic Independence". We define this as having the ability to go wherever we want, whenever we want, in a comfortable manner, without running into financial problems.
